Lime renders vs cement renders

The use of an impervious Portland cement render in place of a traditional lime based covering restricts evaporation Hairline cracks form due to the mortar being more rigid than the wall These then draw in water that becomes trapped in the fabric.

MORTAR SPECIFICATION

Portland Cement

Description This is a general purpose Cem II Portland Cement suitable for use in concretes screeds mortars and renders We generally do not advise the use of Portland Cement in lime mortars as it will create mortars which are too hard and not flexible enough for solid wall construction.

Why add lime to Portland cement

lime to add an early firmness time for the finish to start to set and not have enough time to float their wall or section Lime is used in cement mortar for bricks stones and whatever This explains tooled stucco details and work like beaded joints in stone work The mortar was firm enough to shape yet there was time to shape the mortar.

Ecologic Lime Mortar

NO Portland Cement is present or needed in deGruchy s Ecologic Mortars yet the stock material will still reach the 750 required for a Type N mortar while maintaining the high permeability required for repointing and repair to historic structures originally built with lime mortars Due to the lack of Portland cement Ecologic

Limetec

CEMENT/LIME

CEMENT/LIME generally combining portland or blended cements and crushed limestone with a series of additives to enhance workability For most historic restoration work however it is common to exclude these unknown compositions and restrict the mortar binder to blends of portland cement and hydrated lime.
